Birth Position

Relentless competition, name-calling, hair-pulling and blame-shifting plague households with two or more children everywhere. Can’t we all just get along?
Well, sure, sometimes. But the reality is that all siblings aren’t created equal and they don’t get treated as such. Firstborns, for example, often get shafted because parents are stricter with them, while later-born kids might have fewer rules. And everyone knows that the youngest seems to get away with murder because parents have seen it all before. And where’s the middle child in all of this? Forgotten or overlooked.

Depending on birth position, there are special roles within families, leading to different adaptation patterns and different personalities, says Ben Dattner, a New York City-based organizational psychologist. As a result of a stricter upbringing, for example, firstborn children tend to be more extroverted and confident, while second-born kids are more rebellious and open to new experiences, he says. The youngest child is usually the most creative and can be manipulative to get his or her way.

I’m so sorry

I guess I have been too much pay my allegiance to the formula of failure which is to please everybody…except myself. Thus in the process I’ve been missing so many things that most of the time important for those I wanted to please. I feel bad because of it. Now I want to make a bit of paradigm shift inside of me, in other words a self reform.

It sounds nice to please everybody. It certainly sounds noble but the truth is it’s not. The more I want to please everyone around me, the more I will hurt them and much importantly I am the one who hurt the most. Why? Because “everyone/everybody” is just too many to cope with.

Credit Card Customer Service Representative

Here’s a conversation I once had about my new credit card with Customer Service representative. It’s almost word for word (as far as I can recall). The last part was awesome.

Me : Hi! I’d like to add an alternate ship-to address to my credit card please.
Her : You mean you want that for today?
Me : Well … it doesnt need to be done right away … if it takes a couple of days thats ok.
Her : No, it is only good for one day.
Me : What!??
Her : We can add an alternate address to your account for one day.
Me : But eerrr I dont move around that much. Is there any way to add it permanently?
Her : No ma’am. I’m afraid not.
Me : Why not?!
Her : We dont do that ma’am.
Me : Oh well … then could you put in a request that this be added?
Her : I can add a note to your account ma’am.
Me : I meant …. like more of a “suggestion-that-someone-might-listen-to” sort of thing.
Her : You can write to our Correspondence Centre ma’am.
Me : I’m not really interested in writing letters for now, I just wanted to make a suggestion. Is there anyway it can de done by a phone call?
Her : You will still need to write a letter ma’am
Me : That seems a little inconvenient dont you think? Dont you care about hearing what your customers want?
Her : No ma’am. That is why we have a Correspondence Centre.
